Another Fun Way to Get Passionate About GMing Again

I recently sent out my #1 tip on how to beat GM burnout. Many replies came back advising to play for awhile to get a fresh perspective on the game.

This is excellent advice! In fact, I did just that. Twice.

It’s been a tricky year for me with a broken foot, several bouts of cancer in the immediate family, a passing, covid, and other things that keep knocking us down here. So I asked my business partner, Jochen, to take over GMing our group. He graciously agreed, and I’ve been having a blast playing a knight in The Dark Eye RPG. He’s an excellent GM.

Surprisingly, I’m enjoying the dungeon crawl we’re doing. A lot. I stopped running crawls a long time ago because I was bored of them. But playing one has ignited a strong desire to design and run one in the future.

In addition, I reached out to a friend on Discord recently and asked if he could run me in a Cyberpunk Red one-shot. He agreed! We play at the end of this month. I tend to run fantasy, so getting to experience another genre, and from the player’s side of the screen, is going to be great.

So the best place to quest around for a chance to play is to just ask your friends. Ask if they’d run you in a one-shot so there’s no long commitment to scare them off. This also gives players who’ve never GM’d before a chance to try it out in a safe space where you’ll want, and help, them to succeed.

Another place you can quest for a game to join is the #looking-for-game channel on my Discord. Many game publishers have Discord servers now, and they often have a group finder type channel you could drop a message into.

Finally, I’ve heard good things about the StartPlaying site. Some games cost $$ and some are free. I see lots of listings there. I have not tried the service myself, but have been thinking about it, possibly as a pro GM. Not sure I’m a pro GM, but it might be fun to finally make a dent in my GM Bucket List.

So, if you’re not feeling it as a GM right now, try to scrounge up a game. Ask your players and friends to GM a one-shot for you. Or post a message in Looking For Game type places.

If you know of a site or service where someone can find a group or join a one-shot, please hit me back with the link. Thanks!

Cheers,
Johnn
